Athanasios Moulakis

President Emeritus of the American University of Iraq

Dr Athanasios Moulakis is President Emeritus of the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani. He taught Political Theory and Humanities at German Universities, the London School of Economics, The European University Institute in Florence, the University of California, San Diego, St. John’s College, Annapolis, and the University of Colorado, Boulder, before becoming Director of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies of the University of Italian Switzerland in Lugano. He was subsequently Chief Academic Officer and Acting President of the American University of Afghanistan.

He has published widely in five languages. Among his books, Beyond Utility, Liberal Education for a Technological Age was chosen “Book of the year” and received the American Association of Colleges and Universities’ Ness Award for best book on liberal education. In later years much of his scholarly work has addressed questions of international relations and conflict resolution, notably in the Middle East, the Mediterranean and the Balkans.

He was named an honorary Fellow of University College, London, Olin Distinguished Lecturer at Harvard University, Helen Edison Lecturer at UCSD, and Fulbright Professor of Philosophy at the University of Jena. He has been a Fellow of the Onassis foundation and a scholar in South-East European Studies at Woodrow Wilson Foundation for Scholars in Washington DC.
